Understanding the DDC System

The Dewey Decimal Classification system divides all knowledge into 10 main classes, each assigned a range of 100 numbers. These main classes are further divided into more specific subjects.

Each book in our library has a DDC number on its spine label. This number helps you locate the book on the shelf and indicates its subject matter.

Why does the library use the Dewey Decimal System?

Created by Melvil Dewey in 1876, it provides a consistent, logical way to organize books by subject — making it easier for knowledge seekers to find materials on similar topics grouped together. It's our library's version of a well-organized spice bazaar!

What if I can't find a book with the DDC number?

The book might be checked out, misshelved, or we may need to update our catalog. Our friendly library guides are always happy to help you in your quest! You can also search our online catalogue.

Are all books in the library classified with DDC?

Most nonfiction books use the Dewey Decimal System, but fiction books are arranged alphabetically by author's last name. Reference materials, periodicals, and special collections have their own organization systems.

How are books about Zanzibar classified?

Books specifically about Zanzibar's history, geography, or culture often have numbers starting with 916.78 (Geography) or 967.8 (History). We also have a special Spice Islands Heritage section for rare manuscripts and local publications.
