A Magical Space for Young Readers

Welcome to the Children's Corner!

A colourful, safe, and inspiring space at ZLSB where children of all ages discover the joy of reading, storytelling, art, and learning. Every child is a reader — we just help them find their book!

Where Stories Come Alive

The Children's Corner at the Zanzibar Library Services Board (ZLSB) is a dedicated space designed to nurture a love of reading and learning in young people from an early age. We believe that every child — regardless of background — deserves access to books that spark their imagination and broaden their world.

Our corner features a carefully curated collection of children's books, picture books, story books, and educational materials in both Kiswahili and English. Comfortable seating, colourful décor, and a welcoming atmosphere make it the perfect place for children to explore, dream, and grow.

We regularly host storytelling sessions, reading clubs, arts & crafts activities, and holiday programmes to bring families and children together around the magic of books. ZLSB is proud to make this space available free of charge to all children of Zanzibar.

Everything parents and guardians need to know about the Children's Corner at ZLSB.

Is the Children's Corner really free for all children?
Yes, absolutely! Membership and access to the Children's Corner is completely free for all children aged 0–17 years. There are no registration fees, no borrowing fees, and all programme activities are free of charge.
What age groups are catered for at the Children's Corner?
We welcome children from birth to 17 years old. Our collection and programmes are divided into age groups: 0–4 (picture books & board books), 5–8 (early readers), 9–12 (chapter books & junior fiction), and 13–17 (young adult). Our librarians can help find the right match for every child.
Do children need to be accompanied by a parent?
Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Children aged 8–17 may use the Children's Corner independently during opening hours. For all programme activities, parental consent is required when registering.
How many books can a child borrow, and for how long?
Registered child members can borrow up to 3 books at a time for a period of 14 days. Books can be renewed once (for an additional 14 days) if no one else has requested them. Lost or damaged books may incur a replacement fee.
Do you have books in Kiswahili as well as English?
Yes! Our Children's Corner has a rich bilingual collection with books in both Kiswahili and English. We also have some bilingual picture books that feature both languages side by side — perfect for children learning either language.
Can schools arrange group visits to the Children's Corner?
Absolutely! We actively encourage school and nursery group visits. Please contact us in advance to book a session — we will prepare a special storytelling performance, a library tour, and activity packs for each child. Group visits are free for all registered schools in Zanzibar.
